EVEN TURNBULL GOVERNMENT REPORTS NOW HIGHLIGHT POTENTIAL PaTH INTERNSHIP EXPLOITATION

January 18, 2017

A new government commissioned report into the use of internships in Australia provides yet another warning about the potential for exploitation of young Australians under the Turnbull Government's PaTH program.

For some time the Federal Opposition has regularly raised concerns that the rushed announcement and planning around PaTH would leave young Australians open to exploitation and locked out of gaining an actual job.

The Turnbull Government has repeatedly failed to address or respond to concerns about the shape of its PaTH program.

Now, the Sydney Morning Herald reports that even a Department of Employment commissioned report has highlighted the need for internships to be properly managed and regulated.

The study - authored by researchers drawn from UTS, QUT and the University of Adelaide - raises doubts as to whether unpaid work improved a person's chances of getting a job.

It also expresses concerns that if unpaid work continued to expand as an essential prerequisite for getting a job, it could contribute to higher levels of social and economic inequality.

Young Australians keep facing high unemployment under the Turnbull Government.

They're also forced to put up with failing job programs like Work for the Dole, which under the Turnbull Government is unable to provide full time work for nearly 90 per cent of program participants.

Young Australians certainly don't need to now be subjected to potentially exploitative work conditions under a poorly planned internship program.

The Turnbull Government needs to give the public simple answers to very straight forward questions:

  • Can the Turnbull Government guarantee that PaTH interns won’t be used to displace jobs of other employees?
  • Can the Turnbull Government guarantee that PaTH interns won’t be used by employers to cut wages and penalty rates of existing workers?
  • Can the Turnbull Government guarantee that PaTH interns will have their workplace health and safety protected - along with access to workers compensation protection?
  • Can the Turnbull Government guarantee that PaTH interns will get concrete qualifications?
  • Can the Turnbull Government guarantee that PaTH interns will actually get a job?
