The Prime Minister’s been out today on the radio waves backing in the penalty rates cut.
Asked by Neil Mitchell on 3AW this morning whether the Prime Minister supported the cuts to penalty rates or not, the Prime Minister said:
“Well we do support it Neil and I’ve been clear about that.”
MALCOLM TURNBULL, 3AW – 17 March 2017
Well, let me be clear about what supporting the cuts to penalty rates means for Australians:
• Up to 700,000 Australians will lose up to $77 per week;
• People will have to work longer for less pay;
• Women will be disproportionately affected; and
• Regional communities will have less money spent in their economies.
As a result of this decision and the enthusiastic cheerleading by the Prime Minister, real people will experience real hardship.
It’s clear from the Fair Work Commission’s decision, the proposed cuts to Sunday penalty rates are not limited to the Hospitality, Fast Food, Retail and Pharmacy Awards so now nurses, firefighters, aged care workers and others can expect the Prime Minister to support them having their wages slashed as well.
One thing is totally clear, Malcolm Turnbull is so out of touch – he will attack workers but defend the banks and give big business a tax handout.
While Malcolm Turnbull clearly supports massive cuts to penalty rates from his ivory towers in Sydney and Canberra, Labor will be out in the regions, in the townships, in the communities of Australia, with our clear message – no cuts to penalty rates.
