LABOR PAYS TRIBUTE TO OUR TROOPS IN AFGHANISTAN

April 15, 2021

Labor thanks all who have served and are currently serving in Afghanistan following today’s announcement of the withdrawal of our troops.

We acknowledge those who have fought and those who have lost their lives in the Afghan conflict, which has had an Australian presence for almost two decades.

As Minister for Home Affairs I saw first hand the important role the Australian Defence Force played in building civilian capability when I visited Tarin Kowt in 2010 to be briefed on the AFP training of Afghan national police.

We know 41 Australian soldiers have lost their lives and more than 260 were wounded in Afghanistan and we pay tribute to their service.

There are currently 80 Australian troops in Afghanistan as part of 9,500 coalition of US and allied forces, and we welcome their return to Australia later this year.

Labor expects the Australian Government to continue to support international efforts to deliver peace, stability and development in Afghanistan.
